Idaho-based Speer  last week introduced a new series of G2 Gold Dot loads specifically optimized for short-barreled or backup-sized pistols.

The first three new Gold Dot CarryGun offerings will include a 135-grain 9mm G2 HP, a 165-grain .40 S&W load, and a 200-grain .45 Auto +P. For those familiar with Speer’s other offerings, the CarryGun loads use lighter bullets than are typically found in the Gold Dot line. For instance, the typical G2 Gold Dot in 9mm is a 147-grain bullet while the .40 is a 180-grain pill and the usual .45 weighs in at 230-grains.

The lighter bullets on the CarryGun loads, which can produce higher velocities than the heavier ones in a small barrel, are designed to provide reliable expansion and barrier penetration from today’s increasingly popular sub- and micro-compact pistols.

“Most shooters believe that a defensive bullet—any defensive bullet—will perform well in typical self-defense situations,” said Federal Handgun Ammunition Product Manager Chris Laack. “But a duty bullet that is designed and optimized for a full-sized duty handgun may not perform to the same standard when shot from a short-barreled carry or backup gun.”

“Gold Dot CarryGun is going to be the highest-scoring protocol round out of a compact gun ever,” said Laack. “We are seeing really great results shooting it through FBI protocol.”

All three loads are currently shipping and will be sold in 20-round boxes, with the MSRP ranging from $28.99 to $33.99.
